Norland, a leading facilities management provider, announced today it has been appointed by Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) to provide facilities management services to three of its airports. The contract includes a range of maintenance and customer services and a commitment to support the region with local sourcing and employment opportunities.

HIAL is a public corporation, wholly owned by the Scottish ministers. The company operates and manages 11 airports, vital to the social and economic welfare of the areas they serve. HIAL’s airports support some of Scotland’s most remote communities, most of which are heavily reliant on air travel as a means of connecting communities and transporting goods and services. The Group handles around 1.3 million passengers a year.

Inverness, Kirkwall and Stornoway are the airports which are included in the contract with Norland providing a range of specialist maintenance services for the Terminal buildings to cover front of house visitor information services, all mechanical and electrical systems, fire and intruder systems; baggage scales and belts; automatic doors; cash handling; car park charging, communication systems as well as cleaning and waste management.

Inglis Lyon, Managing Director of HIAL, said: “We are delighted to be working with Norland, a major provider of airport services across the UK, and look forward to developing new, innovative approaches to customer service that not only deliver value for money for the taxpayer but make the passenger journey through our airports even more efficient and enjoyable. “

Tommy Meikle, Managing Director of Norland’s UK services capability said: ‘Norland is well established in Scotland and make a significant contribution to the Scottish economy. We are experienced in aviation and the challenges involved when working in public-facing environments so focused on security and safety. We work airside at Birmingham as well as with British Airways at Heathrow Terminal 3 and 5 and Gatwick.   As a Scot myself, I am delighted we will be able to serve Scotland’s diverse regions with passenger-focused service at all times”.

Norland will be sourcing specialist services from local companies as part of its commitment to the local community and will be creating local employment opportunities. The company has a long-standing history of working in Scotland and contributing to the Scottish economy. It employs around 200 staff in the region, based both at client sites throughout the nation and also at Norland’s offices in High Blantyre, Hamilton, which it opened 12 years ago.

Inverness, the busiest of HIAL’s airports, was recently named as the best performing airport in Scotland in a Which? magazine report. The Which? study ranked airports in terms of speed of check in, airport security, information and wayfinding, toilets and shopping and eating facilities, based on feedback from passengers. Inverness scored an average of 68%, higher than any other Scottish airport.

Earlier this year, HIAL became the first airport group in Scotland to introduce free Wi-Fi across its network of 11 airports.
