Norland named CIBSE ‘Contractor of the Year’

Norland, one of the UK’s fastest-growing facilities and project management companies, has been named ‘Contractor of the Year’ at the CIBSE awards which took place last night. The judges commented: “The winning entry demonstrated their interaction with the client’s users, with training, post-occupancy evaluation and local sourcing prominent.”

The CIBSE awards recognise, reward and celebrate the best performance, innovation and practice in design, commissioning, construction, installation and operation of sustainable buildings and the manufacturers whose technologies enable energy efficiency. They focus on actual, measured performance not design intent or performance specifications and are judged by a panel of distinguished industry leaders.

It was Norland’s work with a global telecommunications giant to retrofit a large office building and a call centre which caught the eye of the judges. Norland were already the building maintenance provider at the site but won the £multi-million project in a competitive tender. As the Project Manager, Norland handled the design, all aspects of the Construction Design Management (CDM) and building control. The project was managed as a phased implementation of works across two buildings, 8,500 sq m, five floors and 1,000 staff. The project included replacement of an existing HVAC system, new lighting, ceilings, lifts and the introduction of a heat recovery system, environmentally-friendly coolants and fresh air movement. Norland also designed and built a new video conferencing suite for the client and fully decorated both buildings.

Rob Giles, Head of Projects for Norland’s UK Services division said: “The award demonstrates Norland’s capability to deliver in the market place and extend the life span of customers’ buildings” He added: “ We used a soft landings approach to ensure that occupiers were fully engaged with the project and could ensure its sustainability in the long term.  We even used a project blog to keep everyone informed. As with any project, timescales and budgets were very important but in this case we were working in a live setting and needed to make sure that the client remained operational throughout”.

As a result of the increasing volume of projects business Norland is seeing from clients, the facilities management provider has made a number of new appointments in this area recently and has decided to formalise its large projects capability into a new capability called ‘NorlandBUILD’.

Norland’s clients have already entrusted the management and maintenance of their facilities and property estate to Norland so it makes sense for them to turn to the company most familiar with their property estate when they need extra works or building projects. This is why Norland set up its projects business over 25 years ago. Since then demand has grown significantly.
