“FM gets boost from industry-research cooperation”

A unique deal between an industry association and a research body has been signed that promises to raise levels of competence and competitiveness in the FM industry. The Facilities Management Association (FMA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with The Facilities Society to create a platform for cooperation that will see sharing of information and knowledge aimed at raising the efficiency and enhancing the effectiveness of FM.

According to Chris Hoar, Director General of the FMA, “the Facilities Society will support our efforts to improve competitiveness in the FM industry through knowledge brokering and a focus on industry best practices. Increasing the flow of know-how from the best performers to everyone in the industry is part of our mission”.

Corporate learning programmes led by experts, utilising state-of-the-art technology, will combine with published studies of best practices to extend individuals’ capabilities and effectiveness. In the process, valuable experiences from FM practitioners will be captured and used to raise awareness and develop improved services for clients.

The Society’s Director, Dr Brian Atkin, argues that “many industries have strong relationships with research bodies and enjoy the benefits they bring in terms of improved work practices and better value for clients and their customers. The FM industry now has an opportunity to exploit research results and innovative practices, and to turn them to profit.”
